Perplexity Checkout Onboarding

Perplexity Buy with Pro Merchant Requirements and How to Join

Perplexity Buy with Pro merchant requirements from the vendors' own pages: the Merchant Program form, PayPal Store Sync eligibility, Shopify's role and fees.

On this page

Perplexity Buy with Pro merchant requirements, whether a store comes at them through Shopify or a PayPal integration, are spread across pages from Perplexity, PayPal and Shopify, and only one of the pages we cite still uses the Buy with Pro name. Perplexity's Help Center now documents in-chat buying as Instant Buy, and its November 2025 post says PayPal powers the checkout. We read every page cited here on October 7, 2026, and we mark what none of them publishes.

Is Buy with Pro still the name?

The launch post from Perplexity, dated November 18, 2024, introduced Buy with Pro as one-click checkout "for select products from select merchants", open to Perplexity Pro users in the U.S., with free shipping on those orders. A year later, a second post from Perplexity announced a new shopping experience "available for free to all US Perplexity users", with PayPal powering checkout.

The Perplexity Help Center article on the feature, last modified on September 3, 2026, is titled "What is Instant Buy?" and never uses the Buy with Pro name. We found no Perplexity page that explains what became of that label, so we treat Instant Buy as the checkout a merchant is onboarding to in 2026. The article sets the gate in one sentence: "We only support Instant Buy with merchants who are compatible with our agentic checkout experience."

What does the Perplexity Merchant Program ask for?

The Perplexity Merchant Program is the only Buy with Pro sign-up we found on Perplexity's own pages, and its public requirements are thin. The 2024 post says the program exists "to make it easy for large retailers to share their product specs with us", and adds: "This program is free for merchants, and we've designed it to give them a straightforward process for sharing data." One of its four listed benefits reads: "Payment integrations to include merchants in our one-click Buy with Pro checkout experience."

Joining starts with the interest form from Perplexity. It has five questions (merchant name, merchant URL, contact name, contact email and shopping vertical), says it takes less than 2 minutes to complete, and ends by telling applicants to watch their email for next steps. We found no published acceptance criteria, minimum catalog size, feed specification or response time, and the post never defines "large retailers".

What PayPal requires before onboarding

Perplexity Buy with Pro merchant onboarding requirements on the PayPal side are the most specific ones in print. The PayPal Newsroom release of November 25, 2025 opens: "PayPal today announced that it has enabled PayPal merchants to become discoverable within Perplexity, giving consumers the ability to checkout in chat." In that release, store sync makes a merchant's catalog discoverable within Perplexity's results, and agent ready lets the merchant accept payments there "using their existing PayPal configurations."

Eligibility sits in the Store Sync overview on PayPal Developer, last updated August 11, 2026. To integrate, a merchant must:

  • be an existing PayPal merchant;
  • sell physical goods to US-based customers in USD, because digital goods, subscription products and sales to customers outside the US are unsupported at this time;
  • use Orders v2 or support an Orders v2 integration, or use Braintree with a compatible setup;
  • have a product catalog that can be shared with PayPal.

Access is by request. The overview says merchants "must complete this form to contact the AI team at PayPal and request access", and the form on PayPal asks for a name, phone number, business email, business name, website, country and an estimated annual sales band. That page says Store Sync surfaces a catalog "in LLMs like Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity, and where other agentic shopping experiences are happening." The Store Sync developer pages we read never name Perplexity, so the connection rests on PayPal's marketing page and its newsroom.

What the product feed and checkout work involve

For a product feed and checkout in 2026, the Perplexity Buy with Pro merchant requirements in print are PayPal's Store Sync requirements, and we found no feed specification published by Perplexity. The catalog guide on PayPal Developer, last updated September 2, 2026, accepts three feed specifications: Google Product Feed, OpenAI ACP Product Feed, and a PayPal Enhanced Shopping Feed that extends the Google format. Files can be CSV, TSV or PSV and "must not exceed 4 GB". Each row represents a single product variant.

A merchant who already maintains a Google feed can reuse it. Under that specification every row needs id, title, link, image_link, description (minimum 25 characters), price with a currency code, and availability. The PayPal Enhanced format adds two required fields, is_eligible_search and is_eligible_checkout.

Checkout is where we expect most of the engineering to go. The overview describes Store Sync as connecting "your product catalog and commerce API" with PayPal's agentic commerce services, and says of a completed purchase: "Your existing order management system receives the order just as it would from any other channel." Brand and product names in the feed should match what your site says, for the reasons in our piece on brand facts that agree with each other.

Where Shopify fits

The Shopify part of the Perplexity Buy with Pro merchant requirements covers discovery, and the PayPal integration covers the purchase. Perplexity's 2024 post says its product discovery "is powered by platform integrations including Shopify", reaching Shopify-powered businesses that sell and ship to the US. A post from Shopify, dated April 2, 2026, spells out the split: "For Perplexity, this integration makes your product listings discoverable in Perplexity's results." It goes on to say that checkout is handled through PayPal's Instant Buy and that those orders "are managed through PayPal rather than your Shopify admin." The same post states: "Perplexity requires joining its Merchant Program." The discovery and checkout lines sit in its guidance on Shopify's Agentic Storefronts, which the post called "in early access" at the time. The Shopify Help Center page on agentic storefronts, as we read it on October 7, 2026, names ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta as AI channels and does not mention Perplexity.

Shopify does not appear in the Store Sync pages we read, and Store Sync expects a commerce API connection, so how cart and order calls reach a Shopify store is a question to put to PayPal's AI team directly.

A hypothetical walk-through

This example is hypothetical, and every figure in it is an assumption for illustration. A US cookware brand on Shopify takes PayPal at checkout and sells 400 products with an average of 3 variants each, so a complete feed is 1,200 rows.

  1. The team sends the five answers on the Merchant Program form and waits for the email.
  2. They submit PayPal's request form and pick the "$1,000,000 - $5,999,999" annual sales band.
  3. Their Google feed already carries the seven required fields, plus the shared item_group_id that PayPal's guide requires when a product is a variant. They remove a downloadable recipe book and a subscription refill plan, since digital goods and subscription products are unsupported.
  4. They ask PayPal how Store Sync's cart and order calls will reach a Shopify store, and they wait for a written answer before promising a launch date.

Who is the merchant of record?

The retailer is, by both companies' accounts. Perplexity's November 2025 post says: "Through our partnership with PayPal, retailers stay at the center of the transaction as the merchant of record." It adds that retailers can process returns and own the post-purchase relationship. PayPal's release says the arrangement "keeps the retailer in control as the merchant of record" and that retailers are paid directly.

Customer service stays with the merchant as well. The Help Center sends shoppers' questions about availability, shipping options, prices and order fulfillment to the brand or retailer.

Does Perplexity charge a commission or merchant fee?

On Perplexity shopping commission and merchant fees, the agentic commerce pages we read name one price: the Merchant Program is free. We found no commission, referral fee or revenue share for Instant Buy orders in Perplexity's two shopping posts or its Help Center article.

On PayPal's page, the line about a simple integration built on an existing PayPal account carries a four-word footnote: "Standard agreement terms apply." We found no fee schedule specific to Store Sync or Agent Ready on the PayPal pages we read. The 2024 post also promised shoppers free shipping on all Buy with Pro orders without saying who funds it.

Our read is that a merchant should plan on its existing PayPal processing terms, then ask both companies in writing whether anything is added per agentic order before going live.

Onboarding makes a product buyable once Perplexity recommends it, and the recommendation is earned on its own terms. The Help Center says: "Our answer engine is more likely to recommend merchants who provide deeper product details such as availability, reviews, pricing, and specifications." So the feed work pays twice, and the same goes for the groundwork in our guides to getting cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews and answer engine optimization.

Whether Perplexity names your products for the questions your buyers ask is a measurement of its own, the one we describe in AI share of voice. Our AI Visibility Checker is a further resource for that side, and our AI search optimization team takes on this kind of work.

Frequently asked questions

Is Buy with Pro the same thing as Instant Buy?
Perplexity launched Buy with Pro in November 2024 for Pro users in the U.S. Its Help Center now documents in-chat buying in an article titled "What is Instant Buy?", which says the service is available to all users in the United States, apart from Enterprise Pro and Enterprise Max plans, and never uses the Buy with Pro name. We found no Perplexity page that explains the change of label.
How does a merchant join the Perplexity Merchant Program?
Through a five-question interest form linked from Perplexity's 2024 shopping post. It asks for merchant name, merchant URL, contact name, contact email and shopping vertical, then tells applicants to watch their email for next steps. Perplexity describes the program as free and aimed at large retailers. We found no published acceptance criteria or response time.
What does PayPal require before a merchant can use Store Sync?
PayPal's Store Sync overview, last updated August 11, 2026, lists four requirements: an existing PayPal merchant account, physical goods sold to US-based customers in USD, an Orders v2 integration or Braintree with a compatible setup, and a product catalog that can be shared with PayPal. Access is requested through a form that goes to PayPal's AI team.
Can a Shopify store sell through Perplexity's in-chat checkout?
Shopify's April 2, 2026 post says its integration makes product listings discoverable in Perplexity's results, and that checkout is handled through PayPal's Instant Buy, with those orders managed through PayPal rather than the Shopify admin. We found no PayPal page describing how a Shopify store connects to Store Sync, so that question belongs with PayPal's AI team.
Does Perplexity take a commission on sales made in its answers?
Perplexity's 2024 post says the Merchant Program is free for merchants. We found no commission, referral fee or revenue share for Instant Buy orders on the Perplexity pages we read.
