Google Ads Audience Planner

Google Ads audiences fall into two families — Google's data (in-market, affinity, custom segments, detailed demographics) and your own data (remarketing, Customer Match, audience expansion). Pick your objective, model and data below and get a prioritized, funnel-mapped audience stack, with targeting-vs-observation guidance and segment examples.

01In-market + optimized targetingTargeting
In-market·Search (Observation) · PMax signals · Display (Targeting)

Point budget at ready-to-buy demand, and let optimized targeting expand to converters beyond the seed.

Example In-market for the product, as a PMax/Display signal
02Remarketing (cart / form abandoners)Targeting
Your data (remarketing)·Search (Observation, bid up) · Demand Gen (Targeting)

Recover the warmest demand you have — people who nearly converted.

Example Cart and checkout abandoners, product viewers
03Customer Match (bid up + expand)Targeting
Customer Match·Search (Observation) · Demand Gen (Targeting)

Bid up known buyers on Search and expand from them on Demand Gen.

Example Purchasers for repeat + lookalike expansion
04Custom segments (bottom-funnel)Targeting
Custom segment·Demand Gen · Display

Catch people on high-purchase-intent searches like brand, pricing and "best".

Example Searched "[product] discount / best [category]"

Rule of thumb: on Search, add audiences in Observation so you learn and bid up without narrowing reach. On Demand Gen, Display and Video, use Targeting to prospect and Observation to broaden. Always exclude recent converters from prospecting.

Google Ads audience types, explained

In-market audiences

People actively researching or comparing products in a category right now. The closest thing Google has to live purchase intent — lead with these for consideration and conversion.

Affinity audiences

Broad, lifestyle-based interest groups for brand-building. Wide reach, lower intent — best for awareness on YouTube and Display.

Custom segments

Audiences you build from keywords people searched, and URLs or apps they used. The most flexible way to reach competitor and high-intent audiences.

Detailed demographics

Longer-term life facts — parental status, homeownership, education, marital status. Useful as an observation layer to learn who responds.

Life events

Moments like moving, graduating, or starting a job that briefly change buying behavior. Powerful for timely, relevant offers.

Your data (remarketing)

People who visited your site, used your app, or engaged with your YouTube channel. The warmest audiences you own — essential for consideration and conversion.

Customer Match

Audiences built from a customer list you upload (emails, phones). Use to re-engage customers, exclude them from prospecting, and seed lookalike expansion.

Audience expansion / optimized targeting

Google expands beyond your selected audiences to find more converters, guided by your signals. Turn it on for conversion campaigns once your seed audiences are proven.
